Seems like last year everybody felt “Bodak Yellow” hit maker Cardi B was snubbed at the 2018 Grammys. New year new me for a lot of people as they felted Cardi B’s multi platinum, multi hit spawning album was undeserving of the “Hip Hop album of the Year.” If not having 1 of the biggest albums of the year, & multiple cross over hit records, & confessions inspired themes isn’t enough reason to deserve “Hip Hop AOTY.” Lets dive a little deeper.

 

1st Pusha T’s Daytona project, no hit records, no singles, no promotion or interest in the album outside of it dissing Drake,& the controversial decision to use Whitney Houston bathroom as the cover art. Push had 7 songs,& none got more publicity then his rebuttal track to Drake. I think any fan of the GOOD music family would agree that Kanye West had a better 7 song album & is a bigger name, the nomination seemed more like a favor to elevate the non interesting “If you Know You Know Rapper,” then a legitimate contender for hip hop album of the year. Im sure most hip hop fans except the ones who passionately hate Drake agree Pusha T’s Daytona didn’t deserve Album of the Year.

Secondly, Rest in Peace Mac Miller, however your album didn’t deserve album of the year. Some people said he didn’t have time to properly promote the album however, it was released a month before his death falling behind fellow Album of the year contender Travis Scott “Astro World.” If failed to garner attention when he released the promo singles in the Spring, if failed to garner attention at its release, & even in his death it failed to perform. This nomination was more to pay their respects then a clear contender for Hip Hop album of the year.

Third, for a moment of truth out of the 5 albums nominated for Hip Hop album of the year Nispey Hussel had the best pure Hip Hop album of the year, however Grammy’s aren’t chosen by hip hop heads,& urban hustlers. Signed to the same label as the winner of the prestigious award you expect the label to put their influence behind their cash cow, which is currently Cardi B.

 

Fourth Travis Scott has a legitimate claim for album of the year being 1 of the biggest albums of the year period, his ties to the power house Kardashian klan, & his once in a lifetime performance at the Super Bowl. All these things lining up for Scott made him seem to be fit for AOTY award. With the demographics of the United States changing, & the spot light being shed on police brutality O feel as if his statements on the “Mike Brown” controversy, & openness to perform at the super bowl, hurt him politically as committee members made their final decisions.

5th & final thought on Cardi b winning the Hip Hop album of the year, what other albums worth recognizing dropped in 2018 besides J.Cole’s K.O.D. & Drakes Scorpion which neither was allegedly submitted. Let me know @Whobeta on twitter * Instagram.
